Ladies and Gentlemen: JAKE

WHO IS “JAKE” ANYWAYS? You might ask yourself.
Well that's him and here’s how he was born:

Let me take you back to Dancer’s abode (circa 1989), a place we affectionately referred to as “scum house”. It was there we used to play cards almost every week. We used to play in the kitchen where there was one of those old refrigerators, you know like with the rounded edges? Well on this fridge someone (we don’t know who) took a small oval shaped plastic bust of a man and glued it on the front of the fridge. It was during one of those card games that one Stubby Malone named him “Jake”. I don’t remember the exact circumstances but it probably had to do with bad luck and bad cards due to sitting right in front of him. He was eventually pulled off the fridge and has had many temporary residences since then (current whereabouts unknown).

It was not until much later Squirrel realized that “Jake” is the same man who appears on the Old Grand-Dad Kentucky Bourbon whiskey bottle. Ain't that a kick in the - um... head?

and so it began... Jake Day

The original founding members of Jake are as follows (nicknames are used to protect the innocent): From left to right (standing) - Dancer, Squirrel, Hub, Chag (your humble host), Heff, Doc, Stubby, (kneeling) Lt. Stalkfleet, Rosco (also goes by Mashie Nibblets or Rooster). It's worth noting that Cool Chief is not depicted here as he did not fully understand the magnitude of what this day would become. He decided to work or some such bullshit.

To whom it may (or may not) concern:
THE STORY OF JAKE DAY

It was in the early 1990’s we were all graduating from our perspective institutions of higher education. After which, two members of us thought (paraphrasing wildly) “Wouldn’t it be nice to come back and visit these days again? We should have 1 day where we just do shit with each other. I mean like taking a day off, putting the responsibilities of our lives on hold if only for a short period of time. A day to kick back and enjoy, just as we’ve enjoyed, and taken for granted, our college years.” And so, Jake Day was born.

Each year since that day, always on the Friday closest to the summer solstice we all take the day off (hopefully by calling in sick) and spend the day together. We’ll usually meet for breakfast followed by a round of golf and then it’s on to various establishments for libations, spirited conversation, goofing on other people and just generally hanging out together. Jake Day started in June of 1992 and has taken on many forms, but the true constants have remained the same: Get up early, have some fun, have some drinks and get home in one piece.

The picture above was taken on June 19th 1992 which was the first Jake Day ever. There have been more since. Oh, have there been more...
